Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Plant Operating Engineer.
Under the supervision of the energy building plant manager, monitor and operate combined heat and power plant (boilers, gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators, diesel generators, transformers, switchgear and electrical distribution equipment, auxiliary equipment, connected equipment controls, etc.). Ensure plant operations are performed safely and efficiently; monitor and respond to changes in operating conditions and system load demands to maintain continuous plant performance and prescribed plant output; perform preventive maintenance duties and routines. As required, receive plant fuel and material deliveries. Maintain qualifications for, perform stack emissions observations, document and write/generate reports satisfactory to the authorities having jurisdiction, and maintain/operate emissions equipment.
Job Responsibilities:
- Makes rounds to ensure that appropriate corrective and preventative maintenance measures are taken to continue operation efficiently and uninterrupted. Identifies problems in areas, equipment and other issues. Communicates issues to other shops and management. Repairs equipment under domain.
- Ensure plant operations are performed safely and efficiently; monitor and respond to changes in operating conditions and system load demands to maintain continuous plant performance and prescribed plant output; perform preventive maintenance duties and routines. As required, receive plant fuel and material deliveries. Maintain qualifications for, perform stack emissions observations, document and write/generate reports satisfactory to the authorities having jurisdiction, and maintain/operate emissions equipment.
- Operate manual and automatic valves and controllers in the plant. Respond to field emergencies as needed. Perform lock out tag out as directed. Operate the plant either in the field or via the plant computerized control systems
- Provide complete and effective shift turn-over to oncoming shift. On an ongoing basis, be aware of and up-to-date with, plant conditions by reviewing the operations communication binder, work orders, outage work packages, log book, shift turn-over reports, night orders, standing orders, lock out tag out log, plant control systems or other communication protocols as directed.
- Respond to emergencies in central plant and other locations and restore plant and building systems to stable and safe operations; troubleshoot and fulfill/resolve work orders as directed by Engineer or plant management.
- Perform rounds and prepare work orders for required maintenance work. Respond to and record completed activities in work order system relative to job duties, including daily or frequent activities such as fuel changeovers, cleaning and changing strainers, water chemistry readings, reports and physically adding chemicals to the plant etc. Perform cleaning stations tasks and duties, operations work orders and night work orders completely and safely. Additional tasks and duties as directed by the Engineer or plant management.
- Perform plant rounds and record plant parameters on prescribed frequencies with required details as directed. Troubleshoot any abnormal plant conditions and report to plant management as required and directed. Provide safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the cogeneration facility.
- Maintain all relevant licenses including steam operator, fire safety director, emergency action plan director, standpipe/sprinkler, fuel oil operator, fire alarm, etc.
- Demonstrate leadership and interpersonal skills and following accepted procedures and techniques in conformance with N.Y.U. Langone Medical Center requirements.
- Maintain plant equipment and work areas in a safe, clean and healthful manner. Observe all Human Resource employee guidelines, departmental guidelines, policies, procedures and plant safety requirements including work rules and guidelines at all times and supervise personnel accordingly.
- Respond to emergencies in central plant and other locations and restore plant and building systems to stable and safe operations; troubleshoot and fulfill/resolve work orders as directed. Perform operations preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance as directed.
- Prepare work orders for required maintenance and repair work. Respond to and record completed activities in work order system relative to job duties, including daily or frequent activities such as fuel changeovers, cleaning and changing strainers, feed water and other chemical treatment, chemistry testing and application etc. Perform cleaning stations, operations work orders and night work orders completely and safely. Ensure all areas of plant and building are cleaned, maintained and organized.
- Uphold medical center and department policies, including safe work practices, ethics guidelines and work order procedures. Work in collaboration with other Facilities Management and medical center departments and colleagues, service providers as requested by Supervisor/Manager.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the organization’s mission and core values and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Graduate.
- 5 years of relevant Experience.
- City of New York Engineers License for High Pressure Boilers, Engines and Pumps required.
- Required Licenses: Statnary Engr High Pres Boiler

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $159,472.64 – $159,472.64 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.

Schedule Interviews

Receive Offer
If you successfully complete the interview process and are identified as a finalist for the position, we will require that you complete a professional reference process. After evaluating the completed references, a decision will be made on who will receive a preliminary offer. If you receive a preliminary offer, HR will start the onboarding process with an agreed-upon tentative start date.
Step 4
Training & Orientation
You will be contacted by an onboarding specialist who will work with you on your pre-boarding requirements. Once fully cleared, we will ask you to complete compliance orientation regulatory training. On your first day, you will attend an online required orientation to acclimate to the health system and report to your new department based on instructions provided by your hiring manager.
