Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a 2025 Summer Student Nurse Extern NYU Langone Hospital- Brooklyn.

In this role, the successful candidate Performs patient care procedures and related activities within the framework of the written care plan and assignment by the professional registered nurse Works closely with the professional nurse to determine patient needs implements care activities and reports patient/family responses Carries out patient assignments under the direct supervision of the registered nurse with a comprehensive approach to achieve specific outcomes Reports to the RN specific functions completed Observes the RN in the performance of professional nursing care

The program begins on Tuesday June 4, 2024 and requires full time work through August 3, 2024.  While candidates will be able to give their preferences for areas of interest, hires will be made based on unit needs.  Two clinical references will be needed after an offer is extended.  Please include clinical experience and GPA on your resume/application.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the rationale and basic principles of assigned patient’s treatment/care procedures.
  • Participates in unit-based quality initiatives under the guidance of a registered professional nurse. Participates in unit-based quality initiatives under the guidance of a registered professional nurse.
  • Recognizes own limitations and requests assistance when needed.
  • Seeks learning resources for identified learning needs.
  • Observes patient teaching.
  • Participates in classroom or unit-based educational learning activities.
  • Functions as a respectful member of the health care team.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the NYUMC’s Service Standards and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
  • Cooperates and interacts with the interdisciplinary team members when carrying out patient care.
  • Completes written documentation of these activities and observations, obtaining co-signature by the supervising registered nurse.
  • Assumes responsibility for observing patient/family responses, changes in patient condition, results of procedures performed and reports same to the designated registered nurse.
  • Participates in the planning and evaluation of nursing care by active participation in conferences.
  • With additional training and demonstrated competency, may also be permitted to perform the following clinical functions and treatments: Obtains 12 lead EKGs. Uses a glucometer.
  • Verbally and non-verbally communicates support and responsiveness to patients, families, and other staff.
  • Supports patient’s privacy and confidentiality.
  • Observes and reports changes in the patient’s condition and environment to the registered nurse.
  • Observes the nursing process, i.e., assessment, documentation, planning, interventions, and evaluation under the direction of the registered nurse.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care by identifying physical, psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, religious, and development needs, and adapting interventions accordingly.
  • Utilizes the written patient care plan/clinical pathway to deliver patient care.
  • Provides oral suctioning and mouth care.
  • Performs intake and output.
  • Applies clean dressings.
  • Measures vital signs.
  • Incorporates infection prevention/control guidelines, and risk management in patient care.
  • Provides assistance to patients with activities of daily living and encourages appropriate self-care.
  • Utilizes nursing interventions to prevent the complications of bed rest and immobility.
  • Provides for hygiene, safety, and comfort needs of assigned patients.

Minimum Qualifications:
 To qualify you must be a freshman sophomore junior or senior enrolled in a Bachelors of Science Nursing program You must be able to provide proof of enrollment in a BSN program BLS Certification through the American Heart Association AHA is required Demonstrates physical stamina manual dexterity visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities Preference given to those with a 3 5 GPA or higher.

Required Licenses: Basic Life Support Cert

Preferred Qualifications:
To qualify you must have: Completion of a minimum of one clinical semester with a medical/surgical focus in a BSN program Acceptable transcript GPA of 3 5 or higher and two clinical references from the School of Nursing Successful completion of a written screening questionnaire BLS Certification through AHA Demonstrates physical stamina manual dexterity visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities

 Preferred Qualifications: Ability to continue working as a SNE during the 2024 25 school year for at least 23 hours per month Desire to start RN career in New York City

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $20.00 – $20.00 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. Step 1

Apply Online

The NYU Langone hiring process begins with you applying through our online portal. Be sure to update and upload your resume. Shortly after you submit your application, you will receive an email confirmation. Ten days after applying you will receive a talent assessment to be completed.

Step 2

Schedule Interviews

If selected to continue the interview process, HR will reach out via phone or email first. Then, depending on your position, they will schedule an interview with unit managers or team members. You are encouraged to dress professionally for all interviews.

Step 3

Receive Offer

If you successfully complete the interview process and are identified as a finalist for the position, we will require that you complete a professional reference process. After evaluating the completed references, a decision will be made on who will receive a preliminary offer. If you receive a preliminary offer, HR will start the onboarding process with an agreed-upon tentative start date.

Step 4

Training & Orientation

You will be contacted by an onboarding specialist who will work with you on your pre-boarding requirements. Once fully cleared, we will ask you to complete compliance orientation regulatory training. On your first day, you will attend an online required orientation to acclimate to the health system and report to your new department based on instructions provided by your hiring manager.
