Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Intern.
In this role, the successful candidate The Scientific and Technical Education Pathway Programs for Students (STEPPS) undergraduate internship is a one-year, paid opportunity for students to gain knowledge and hands-on experience in clinical research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Offered through NYU Langones Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI), STEPPS prepares students to enter the clinical research workforce following graduation and provides them with experience to support graduate-level applications.
We are seeking undergraduate students enrolled in associate or bachelors degree programs in the New York City area. Applicants should be interested in pursuing clinical research careers. This year-long internship program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain first-hand experience in clinical research with faculty at NYU Langone Heath in a wide variety of fields. This program begins in August with a 3-week, full-time (35 hours a week) summer intensive training that includes in-person lectures about clinical research topics and hands-on practice and is followed by internship placement in an active clinical research group at NYU during the academic year. Students will have the opportunity to participate in scholarly projects and be an integral part of the research team. Finally, students will have ongoing didactics and mentorship. Participants will receive compensation of $20 per hour for the duration of their internship. Interns are expected to devote up to 10 hours a week during the academic year to their assigned research groups. No previous clinical research experience is required.
Job Responsibilities:
Didactic and Experiential Research Intensive:
Participate in in-person didactic sessions to gain a solid understanding of research methodologies, good clinical practice, research ethics, and best practices.
Engage in experiential learning activities at our Brooklyn Clinical Research Center, such as consenting practice, protocol reviews, patient case reviews, and observation of clinical assessments including vitals, phlebotomy, and lab processing to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world research studies.
Interact in a courteous and professional manner with patients/subjects and families who are participants in research studies.
Lab Placement: Depending on the lab placement, students will do some or all of the following:
Collaborate with experienced researchers and faculty members in a clinical research laboratory setting (dry lab).
Assist in ongoing research projects, conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and contributing to research publications.
Collaborate with various personnel that may be involved in assisting with specific aspects of the study.
Undergo study-specific training and complete assessments on study subjects/patients per protocol.
Coordinate patients on study through the healthcare system and continue to follow through with them as part of the research study.
Initiate and continue regular contact with patients; encourage visit reminders and compliance to research; ensure contact with patients and their families is courteous, effective, professional and cooperative.
Manage patients within patient protocol parameters to ensure patient safety; observe clinical testing.
Utilize established methodologies to collect patient information for the research projects; gather and compile data, statistics and other materials as needed. Input clinical and non-clinical data in the database.
Administer surveys.
Conduct qualitative interviews.
Help to enter and manage data.
Gather, properly package, store and transfer slides, samples and other important materials. Coordinate the shipment and transfer of varies types of materials among the various departments and labs.
Receive training and comply with all FDA Good Clinical Practice guidelines and regulations.
Communicate proactively with patients, principal investigators and coordinators and staff.
Attend and complete a multitude of online trainings provided by the institution.
Coordinate monitor visits and schedule and reserve conference rooms.
Assist in recruiting efforts, with proper training.
Observe and shadow staff of each department within the clinical research center in order to gain a better understanding of research, including: laboratory, regulatory, study coordinators, pharmacy, etc.
Professional Development:
Attend lab meetings, seminars, and other relevant events to expand your knowledge and network with professionals in the field.
Enhance your research and analytical skills through specialized training programs and workshops available through the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and NYU Langone Health.
Present your findings at internal and/or external seminars or conferences.
Receive mentorship and guidance from faculty members and professionals in the field.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Strong desire to obtain knowledge in all aspects of conducting clinical research.
Undergraduate student enrolled in a relevant field of study at a 2- or 4-year college or university in the New York City area.
Strong academic record and excellent analytical skills.
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Detail oriented and organizational skills required.
Ability to devote full-time schedule (35 hours a week) for the summer intensive program and 10 hours a week during the academic year.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $16.00 – $20.00 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. Receive Offer
If you successfully complete the interview process and are identified as a finalist for the position, we will require that you complete a professional reference process. After evaluating the completed references, a decision will be made on who will receive a preliminary offer. If you receive a preliminary offer, HR will start the onboarding process with an agreed-upon tentative start date.
Step 4
Training & Orientation
You will be contacted by an onboarding specialist who will work with you on your pre-boarding requirements. Once fully cleared, we will ask you to complete compliance orientation regulatory training. On your first day, you will attend an online required orientation to acclimate to the health system and report to your new department based on instructions provided by your hiring manager.
