Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Per Diem Standardized Patient – Long Island School of Medicine Simulation Center – Mineola.
In this role, the successful candidate helps train health care professionals (e.g., medical students, residents, nurses). A Standardized Participant (SP) is trained to portray a patient, family member, health care team member, etc. Will be employed for purposes of training and/or assessing health care professionals (e.g., medical students, residents, and nurses). Selected candidates will be trained to simulate symptoms and illnesses for routine medical examinations, and assess clinical skills of participating health care professionals. During teaching or assessment activities SPs should expect that the learner may interview, counsel and/or physically examine them. In this role, SPs may portray various medical, behavioral and emotional scenarios involving established/scripted scenes in support of training clinical professionals throughout the health system. SPs may provide feedback to clinical professionals (learners) regarding their conduct, response and medical assessment to ensure they are providing excellent service for patients.
Job Responsibilities:
- May be asked to participate in as an Ultrasound Model: An SP used for teaching clinical skills including the demonstration of ultrasound techniques.
- Perform a variety of duties after training and rehearsal to accurately and consistently portray various medical scenarios or cases.
- Know the history of the presenting illness, past medical history, physical exam results as well as their body language, emotional state and personality.
- Simulate all aspects of each clinical scenario including a patient’s appearance, demeanor and affect, communication style, chief complaint, symptomatology, past medical history, and physical findings.
- Participates with learner in mock interview, counseling and/or a physical examination.
- Provides feedback to learners in a constructive manner as coached.
- Uses ongoing feedback from the supervisor/trainer, incorporates it into the case simulation, and is open to continual retraining regarding portrayal and ratings.
- Accurately and consistently completes Communications Skills, and History & Physical checklists indicating areas addressed or not addressed by the learner during scenario assessment.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Recall actions and dialogue that may have occurred during an interaction with the trainee.
- Must be reliable in following rules and procedures for the exam.
- May be asked to patriciate in Unannounced Standardized Patient Work: The Standardized Patient is in a setting where only a select few, including the SP, are aware the situation is a simulation
- May be asked to participate as a Print Model: Actors and models for the covers and pages of publications advertising goods and services.
- May be asked to participate in Market Research: Live study using SPs for the purpose of gathering, analyzing and interpreting information about a market, product or service.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a High School diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and requirement. Must have strong reading and writing skills to absorb and use the detailed case training and exam procedural information Required. General computer skills. Must be able to use a simple computer program, mainly involving clicking the “mouse” and typing on the keyboard Required. An SP must be able to follow directions in achieving the portrayal, be highly dependable in their work, including punctuality Required. Must be responsible about keeping track of scheduled work days Required. Must be able to portray a person other than themselves effectively and consistently in a standardized way Required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Required. Must be willing to wear a hospital gown with only undergarments underneath, while on camera and/or observed live through an observation window or video monitor Required. Comfort with a physical examination of SPs entire body by health care professionals with exception of rectal, pelvic, genital, female breast and corneal reflex examinations Required. Must be comfortable having repeated physical examination maneuvers performed on self Required. Must be objective when interacting with and rating examinees of all backgrounds Required. Able to be flexible regarding assignments and scheduling. Must be willing to work a varied schedule due to a potential 7-day per week, schedule of exams for AM and PM shifts Required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience as a standardized patient desirable Preferred. Experience in theatre, medical field or educational field desirable Preferred.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $28.00 – $28.00 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.

Receive Offer
If you successfully complete the interview process and are identified as a finalist for the position, we will require that you complete a professional reference process. After evaluating the completed references, a decision will be made on who will receive a preliminary offer. If you receive a preliminary offer, HR will start the onboarding process with an agreed-upon tentative start date.
Step 4
Training & Orientation
You will be contacted by an onboarding specialist who will work with you on your pre-boarding requirements. Once fully cleared, we will ask you to complete compliance orientation regulatory training. On your first day, you will attend an online required orientation to acclimate to the health system and report to your new department based on instructions provided by your hiring manager.
