We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Scientist.
The NYU Cryo-EM Core is a fee-for-service laboratory operated by the NYU Langone Medical Center as a state-of-the-art shared resource for biomedical researchers. The Cryo-EM staff members develop and provide their knowledge and expertise to the research community at NYULMC in applying cryo-EM imaging to their research. They work closely with investigators to define optimal experimental design including strategies for preparation of samples, maintain and operate cryo-electron microscopes and ancillary equipment in order to provide high resolution images, and provide guidance and service in data management and analysis.
The Research Scientist will report to the Assistant Director of Cryo-EM. The successful candidate will assist facility staff with maintenance and operation of the advanced instrumentation housed in the Cryo-EM core and will work with and train users in specimen preparation. These duties will involve a variety of complex laboratory tasks with standardized procedures that will be performed under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of the core. The candidate will also be responsible for record keeping associated with users, instrument logs, and routine operation of the facility. The candidate will be expected to learn new procedures as they are developed and implemented by the core.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the organizations core values and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
- Responsible for operation of cryo-electron microscopes
Load samples and align microscopes prior to data collection
Work with users to identify suitable samples for imaging and to set up automated data collection
- Responsible for operation of ancillary equipment for sample preparation
Assist users with cryo-EM related equipment such as Vitrobot, glow discharger etc.
Perform routine maintenance to ensure optimal operation of these instruments
Maintain supplies for sample preparation
- Responsible for record keeping
Maintain accurate logs for microscope performance, usage and service
Maintain accurate records for user projects and interactions
Maintain records for ordering and inventory of supplies
Maintain records for usage of various ancillary instruments in the cryo-EM facility
Maintain documentation for Standard Operating Procedures as developed by the core
- Communications/ Relationships with others
Provides guidance, cooperates, communicates and relates well to all levels of NYULMC Staff.
Listens carefully to others in order to respond appropriately, answer questions or obtain needed information.

Maintains confidentiality of all research information.
Develop and maintain a high level of customer service.
Monitoring and continually seeking to improve the performance of core
Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature and scientific networking
Maintains excellent and professional-level communication skills in oral and written English.
- Judgement / Decision-Making
Is able to recognize problems as they occur; and through the application of appropriate policy/ procedure, determines and/or recommends the appropriate solution.
Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties; asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to ensure accuracy.
Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention.
- Key elements of the job:
This facility will be optimized for high throughput data collection. Fitting into a pipeline that maximizes the efficiency and productivity of the facility will be a key part of this job. The Technical Assistant is expected to work with the Director and Assistant Director to ensure responsiveness to user needs and to generate high quality data in an efficient manner.
The NYU research community includes inexperienced groups with potential cryo-EM projects. Working together with the Director and Assistant Director to implement training plans and providing support and advice to inexperienced users during the initial phase of their projects will ensure that the high resolution pipeline will remain well utilized over the long term.
To qualify you must have a MS in structural biology, biochemistry or related field
2-3 years of experience in cryo-EM including handling samples, using microscopes and evaluation of images
Knowledge of the principles of transmission electron microscopy and 3D structure determination
General understanding of cryo-EM workflow
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to multitask and learn complex new procedures
Excellent organizational skills and record keeping
Special consideration will be given to candidates with a record of achievement in collaborative, team-driven environments
