Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Scientist to collect data and support Dr. Ortiz’s intergenerational health equity research projects in the Department of Pediatrics at NYU Langone Health / NYU Grossman School of Medicine, and NYU Langone Brooklyn. The Research Scientist will work with Medical Center staff and departments, including Directors, Managers, Research Staff, and interfaces with patients and their families.
The Research Scientist will work under the supervision of Dr. Robin Ortiz through the Department of Pediatrics, and in collaboration with her research team, on multiple projects. The first is Dr. Ortiz’s Caregiver Cardiovascular Health Study which aims to understand how the caregiver-child relationship and environment impacts adult caregiver cardiovascular health. The second, NOURISH, collaborates with God’s Love We Deliver (GLWD), a community-based organization that provides medically tailored meals (MTM) to chronically ill persons located in New York City, and to adult clients’ dependents (e.g., children) in the home. One program, for examples, includes gestational diabetes and so supports pregnant persons and their families. The NOURISH study combines an implementation science approach to assessing the referral pathway from clinical care to community intervention with mixed methods data collection (quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews) for exploring the mechanisms underpinning the hypothesis that NOURISH will reduce stress and improve the cardiovascular health of GLWD clients/NYU patients (caregivers AND children) as measured by increased CVH scores and decreased dysregulation of cardiovascular-stress pathophysiology. The study responsibilities for the RS will involve managing and overseeing the project and data collection activities, conducting data analysis, and contributing to manuscript writing and dissemination of findings.
Job Responsibilities:
Project Management
- Develop and maintain a system to ensure timely achievement of all NOURISH project deliverables.
- Coordinate and oversee data acquisition, data management, and data analysis through NYULH and GLWD.
- Support study enrollment, assessments, and medical chart reviews; may also be required to directly conduct participant enrollment, assessment, and chart reviews as needed.
- Collaborate on study design which may involve the preparation of IRB submissions, including original protocols; work with the team’s Research Coordinator related to IRB requirements.
- Engage directly with Community Health Worker, including developing and leading focus groups, surveys and assessments, and entry pathways to research protocols for interested NYU patients/GLWD clients.
- Oversee continuous monitoring of project implementation to ensure quality and timely execution.
- Perform broader administrative tasks related to support day-to-day project operations.
Research Responsibilities
- Create and implement a research agenda for the NOURISH team.
- Initiate and maintain collaborations with co-investigators, between teams, and across NYU departments.
- Lead program implementation and evaluation efforts to monitor intervention outcomes, implementation fidelity, and overall program impact.
- Analyze quantitative and qualitative data using advance statistical techniques for both large studies.
- Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, conference abstracts, and presentations.
Data Duties
Analyses and report generation may require use of statistical programming, such as STATA or SPSS, and potentially qualitative analysis programming such as ATLAS.ti or Dedoose. Training will be provided by Dr. Ortiz and the study team as relevant and needed.
IRB Duties
The RS may assist the Project Coordinator, who has the primary responsibility of IRB protocol management, with the preparation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) materials including the original protocol, amendments, updates, and renewals, as well as keeping track of all study team member requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a PhD in Science, Public Health, Nutrition, Child Development or related field and 3-years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Extensive experience in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method research methodologies. Proficient in statistical software such as SPSS, Stata, Stata, and/or R. Strong scientific writing skills, including experience drafting manuscripts, reports, and grant proposals. Ability to interface effectively with all levels of management and to work and communicate effectively with both internal and external collaborators and partners. Facility with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work within a team environment as well as independently. Ability to work and make decisions independently. Time management skills and ability to multitask. Flexible working hours and location (remote, in-person, off-site at community partners location or client/patient homes, on occasion). Comfortable working with people and in sensitive situations. Ability to interface effectively with all levels of management.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
