Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Environmental Health & Safety Specialist I. 

In this role, the successful candidate proactively, and with minimal supervision 1) develops and improves programs; 2) manages/supports programs and projects; 3) resolves moderately complex, non-routine EH&S issues; and 4) mentors less experienced EH&S professionals.

Job Responsibilities:

  • COMMUNICATION: Communicates germane information, in an appropriate format, to relevant members of the NYULH community clearly, concisely, completely, and in a grammatically correct and timely manner.
  • OTHER: Performs related duties as assigned.
  • PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: Builds behavioral competencies and technical skills through continuing education, self-study, and stretch assignments.
  • ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT: Maintains time database; maintains webpage; serves as administrator for databases and/or web-based platforms; assists with office phone coverage; functions as timekeeper; schedules and coordinates meetings, training and audits.
  • FISCAL MANAGEMENT: Manages expenses in accordance with institutional guidelines. Reviews and reconciles monthly Aging Invoice Statements.
  • RECORD KEEPING: Coordinates identification and implementation of efficient/effective record-keeping systems. Manages and maintains program records. Ensures records are accurate, complete, and compliant. Incorporates relevant documents into departmental files. Organizes records so they are readily accessible.
  • VENDOR MANAGEMENT: Coordinates pre-qualification of vendors. Develops project-specific specifications for routine and non-routine projects. Prepares RFPs, solicits proposals and bids, and coordinates contracting in accordance with NYULH policies and protocols. Manages vendors (e.g., for asbestos waste; chemical segregation; chemical waste; EPA self-audits; intranet platforms; Phase I/II audits; remediation projects; SPCC; testing, inspection, certification and/or maintenance of equipment (e.g., biosafety cabinets, fire extinguishers, fume hoods) or facilities (e.g., ABSL3); training).
  • INCIDENT RESPONSE: Responds promptly, investigates, and collaborates with others to resolve real and perceived emergencies (e.g., fire alarms; hazmat releases; indoor air quality concerns; injuries; odors; off-hours incidents). Coordinates EH&S response when on-call.
  • COMMITTEE SUPPORT: Coordinates, participates in and/or prepares minutes for committees (e.g., institutional, hospital, departmental, or issue-specific), task forces or working groups, and EH&S team meetings for assigned programs.
  • LIAISON: Functions as the EH&S point person for assigned programs, projects, departments, and other responsibilities (e.g., biological/laser/incident safety officer; building coordinator; eLearning; FDNY C14 renewals; FDNY lab inspections; fire response team; FLSD; Select Agents ARO). Actively promotes a culture of safety.
  • TECHNICAL SUPPORT: Researches issues (e.g., code requirements; safety concerns; control options), provides an assessment, and answers questions posed. Critically reviews and provides feedback on documents prepared by others (e.g., construction drawings/plans; consultant reports; evacuation plans; FSP/EAPs; grant applications; IBC/IACUC protocols; JHAs; MOPs; risk management plans; SDSs and product information sheets; SPCCs). Prepares non-technical summaries. Interprets technical information and clearly communicates interpretations and conclusions.
  • MONITORING: Coordinates/conducts appropriate monitoring, including data review (e.g., employee injury/illness, fire alarm, IAQ, spill response); sampling (e.g., environmental, IAQ, IH); compliance audits; inspections (e.g., EH&S supplies (e.g., respirators, spill supplies, and PPE); ergonomic; hazard surveillance; hazardous waste storage; IACUC; lab; QA (e.g., for penetrations, fire doors, ILS, hot work); and other monitoring (e.g., of high-risk activities such as crane picks). Analyzes information and data from monitoring. Identifies opportunities for improvement. Follows-up on issues.
  • TRAINING: Conducts needs assessments for training. Creates learning objectives. Chooses learning strategies and content that support objectives. Develops training content and materials (e.g., for lecture-based training, eLearning modules, hands-on training (e.g., for FLSDs and BESs); drills; Spotlights; posters). Coordinates/conducts training, drills, and fit-testing. Evaluates training and revises as needed to optimize impact.
  • INVENTORY: Coordinates, manages, maintains, and reports inventory (e.g., biological agents, biosafety cabinets, chemicals, CoFs and permits, FIN 47, fire extinguishers, fume hoods, IH equipment, labs, lasers, PBST, PPE, rain gear, spill clean-up supplies).
  • COMPLIANCE: Collaborates with EH&S staff and others to optimize compliance with applicable health and safety regulations. Prepares and submits required documents (e.g., CW TP550 and annual report; FDNY lab permits and C14s; FSP/EAPs; PBST registrations; RTK report) to regulatory agencies. Prepares for/assists with regulatory inspections (e.g., CMS, FDNY, NYS DEC and DOH, OSHA, TJC) and responds to findings.
  • IMPLEMENTATION: Collaborates with EH&S staff and others to standardize, implement, manage, and improve programs and projects.
  • DOCUMENTATION: Creates/writes/reviews/updates program/project documents (e.g., annual evaluations and reports; checklists; fact sheets; flow charts; forms; handbooks; ILS permits and plans; incident response plans; management plans; policies, procedures, and protocols; project planning guidelines; questionnaires; RFPs and contracts; Safety Policies; sampling and report templates). Identifies responsibilities and accountabilities, as appropriate.
  • PLANNING: Develops Action Plans and annual SMART, Stretch goals to address priorities and close gaps. Collaborates with others to plan for the safe, efficient, and effective execution of programs, projects (e.g., through pre-project planning), and tasks (e.g., through pre-task planning). Develops incident-specific response plans.
  • GAP ANALYSIS: Compares, analyzes, and evaluates current to desired (e.g., World Class) safety/compliance performance for assigned programs/projects. Identifies gaps. Prioritizes actions to address gaps.
  • RISK ASSESSMENT: Conducts comprehensive risk assessments and work site assessments for moderately complex health and safety concerns. Gathers, interprets, and evaluates information and data. Makes high quality recommendations.
  • COLLABORATION: Collaborates with EH&S staff and others (e.g., line staff, researchers, supervisors, managers, directors). Resolves problems and conflicts.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a A Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, fire safety, engineering, or another applicable discipline. 2 years relevant experience. A basic knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements and technical issues for assigned programs. Ability to assume responsibility for managing existing health and safety programs, projects, and tasks. Ability to manage a heavy workload. Good organizational, written, and verbal skills. Good fact finding skills. Basic problem solving and conflict resolution skills. Basic ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database computer programs. Basic ability to understand and interpret data. Ability to wear and work in Level C personal protective equipment. Ability to be on-call on a rotating basis to respond to off-hours emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree in an applicable discipline. Current HazWoper certification.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $58,500.00 – $74,200.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. Step 2

Schedule Interviews

If selected to continue the interview process, HR will reach out via phone or email first. Then, depending on your position, they will schedule an interview with unit managers or team members. You are encouraged to dress professionally for all interviews.

Step 3

Receive Offer

If you successfully complete the interview process and are identified as a finalist for the position, we will require that you complete a professional reference process. After evaluating the completed references, a decision will be made on who will receive a preliminary offer. If you receive a preliminary offer, HR will start the onboarding process with an agreed-upon tentative start date.

Step 4

Training & Orientation

You will be contacted by an onboarding specialist who will work with you on your pre-boarding requirements. Once fully cleared, we will ask you to complete compliance orientation regulatory training. On your first day, you will attend an online required orientation to acclimate to the health system and report to your new department based on instructions provided by your hiring manager.
