Position Summary:

We are seeking a Spanish-English bilingual Research Data Associate to collect data and support Dr. Ortiz’s intergenerational health equity research projects in the Department of Pediatrics at NYU Langone Health / NYU Grossman School of Medicine, and NYU Langone Brooklyn. The Research Data Associate will work with Medical Center staff and departments, including Directors, Managers, Research Staff, and interface extensively with our team’s community partnered organization, God’s Love We Deliver.

The RDA will mainly work under the supervision of Dr. Robin Ortiz through the Department of Pediatrics, and in collaboration with her research team and God’s Love We Deliver (GLWD). Dr. Ortiz’s NOURISH Study collaborates with GLWD, a community-based organization that provides medically tailored meals (MTM) to chronically ill persons located in New York City, and to adult clients’ dependents (e.g., children) in the home. One program, for example, includes gestational diabetes and so supports pregnant persons and their families. The NOURISH study aims to connect NYULH patients with GLWD services and also aims to screen current GLWD clients and families for medical and social needs to be addressed with the support of a community health worker. The study is assessing the implementation of a referral pathway for patients to be connected to services. This will require the RDA to support GLWD in collecting and reporting the data related to the referrals (e.g., number of referrals made, information about those who were referred, numbers who did not receive meals, etc.). We are additionally collecting mixed methods data (quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews, and eventually will include biospecimen collection for storage) for exploring the mechanisms underpinning the hypothesis that NOURISH will reduce stress and improve the cardiovascular health of GLWD clients/NYU patients (caregivers AND children) as measured by increased CVH scores and decreased dysregulation of cardiovascular-stress pathophysiology. The RDA will help to support the beginnings of data collection on this later part of the study. Therefore, the RDA, at least initially will mainly help work directly with GLWD to extract and clean data reports on referrals made or lost in the process between NYU and GLWD. The RDA will also follow-up on participants lost to follow-up, in need of additional support, and/or potentially interested in research study participation.

Working Conditions: On site at a Department of Pediatrics NYU Langone Health (Manhattan campus) location 1-2 days a week. Remote work 3-4 days a week.

Job Responsibilities:

Data Duties: The RDA will collect data in collaboration with GLWD using Microsoft Excel and will also create projects and instruments for data entry on RedCap. The RDA will assist with data cleaning and data management. They will implement efficient and secure procedures for data handling and analysis with attention to all technical aspects. RDAs will assist the study team, collaborators, and  PI to code, analyze and interpret data, and write scholarly reports. Analyses and report generation may require use of statistical programming such as STATA or SPSS, as well as qualitative analysis programming such as ATLAS.ti or Dedoose, so though experience is preferred (and not required), training will be provided by Dr. Ortiz and the study team as relevant and needed. As data gathering and report generation that other team members depend on may be the may responsibility of the RDA, time management and timeliness of deliverables is essential to the job.

Though no particular program experience is required, experience with quantitative data beyond entry to include aspects of data cleaning (such as converting text to numeric codes; dealing with missing data), coding (the creation of variables such as calculating variables from others), and/or analysis is required. Examples of programmatic experience with statistical programs that might be beneficial to the job (preferred) (such as STATA, SAS, SPSS, or R). Programming with REDCap or a similar survey tool, for example, also helpful/preferred.

Patient/Participant Communication: The RDA will work closely with both GLWD staff and the NYU Community Health Worker to link clients of GLWD and/or patients of NYU with MTM programs and, as needed, medical and social services as well as follow-up on their cases. The RDA will report to and/or check in with the GLWD team daily to communicate regarding needs of the GLWD team related to data or programming and overall to ensure communication is transparent between academic and community partners on the project.

Assessment Duties: The RDA will may follow up with GLWD clients enrolled in services and/or research study subjects. This may require outreach to individuals when it is most convenient for the participant, including nights and weekends if needed, by phone and in-person; therefore, flexible working hours are required. In addition, the RDA may lead one-on-one qualitative interviews or focus groups with participants in English and/or Spanish.

Medical chart review duties: The RDA may need to conduct medical chart reviews to identify referral orders or community health worker communications, for example. This includes using the medical record system at NYU Langone Brooklyn if and as needed, which would be established to allow for remote access. The RDA would enter all medical chart review data into Redcap.

IRB duties: The RDA will assist the Project Coordinator with the preparation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) materials including the original protocol, amendments, updates, and renewals, as well as keeping track of all study team member requirements. The RDA will assist with the up keeping of the Study Regulations binder.

Program duties: The RDA may be responsible to translate project-related documents. Additional program duties are to assist the Program Coordinator and Manager with grant administration, program reports, and presentations.

Minimum Qualifications:

BA or BS in Science, Public Health, Nutrition, Child Development or related field or Associate degree plus one-year related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Fluency in Spanish (both written and spoken) is a requirement. Facility with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Ability to work with data and understand numbers and concepts related to data tracking and/or coding. Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work within a team environment as well as independently. Ability to work and make decisions independently. Time management skills and ability to multitask. Flexible working hours and location (remote, in-person, off-site at community partner’s location or client/patient homes, on occasion). Comfortable working with people and in sensitive situations.
