Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Lead Cytogenetic Technologist. 

This position performs all routine and complicated laboratory procedures including specimen processing and handling, testing of patient specimens, results (ISCN), review cases and entering patient reports in Epic using the saved templates,  the performance of quality control procedures, operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment. and problem resolution with minimal supervision.  Can function with minimal supervision, participates in problem resolution, and is a resource to junior technologists.  Assists with laboratory operations and quality functions in presence of or absence of a supervisor.

Job Responsibilities:

SPECIMEN SET UP, ACCESSIONING: –

a.     Sets up clinical laboratory specimens for chromosome/FISH tests without supervision.

b.      Sets up specimens according to laboratory protocols following general sterile techniques.

c.       Checks to see if epic requests are appropriate and complete.  Informs lead tech/supervisor if the specimen is not adequate, unusable and the epic requisition form is incomplete. Able to access Epic Beaker for patient clinical history etc.

d.  Handles high volume of work with appropriate speed and assists less experienced co-workers.

e. Sets up cultures for special studies/validation according to laboratory protocol.

HARVESTING AND SLIDE PREPARATION: –

a.      Harvests specimens and prepares slides for both Chromosome and FISH study.

b.      Harvests at appropriate culture duration according to laboratory protocols.

c.       Obtains slides for Chromosome/FISH analysis with adequate number of good quality mitotic cells.

 GTG banding: –

a.      Performs GTG banding to produce quality slides for imaging and karyotyping so that each chromosome can be identified by its characteristic banding pattern which helps in identifying and distinguishing various chromosomal abnormalities.

b.      Able to use GSL scanner for loading and scanning slides for chromosome analysis. Good working knowledge of imaging system.

FISH HYBRIZYZATION, MICROSCOPIC ANALYSIS AND IMAGING: –

a.      Performs FISH hybridization on slides and performs microscopic analysis.

b.      Performs analysis accurately and demonstrates ability to detect abnormal FISH signal pattern.

c.       Records documentation of analysis clearly and neatly.

d.      Demonstrates ability to handle high volume of cases with appropriate speed.

e.      Selects good quality nuclei to be captured for FISH. Produces images which are sharp and of appropriate intensity.

KARYOTYPING: –

a.      Completes karyotyping accurately and efficiently.

b.      Able to detect subtle chromosome abnormalities.

c.      Prepares Chromosome and FISH results using current ISCN nomenclature

TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT: –

a.      Participates in services, continuing education courses. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of policies and procedures in assigned areas and responds to or suggests changes that enhance patient care.

b.       Performs routine and/or preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment.

c.      Maintains sufficient supplies at workstation.

d.        Ensure and maintain quality control and assurance activities.

e.      Use Infection Control practices and procedures.

f.      Troubleshoots basic instrumentation, culture media, chemicals, reagents, probes, stains, solutions, technical problems and methodologies.

g.  Able to communicate with technical support of participating vendors/capital equipment.

TRAINING: –

a.      Trains new and current employees.

b.      Teaching new employees established procedures when necessary.

c.       Orients existing employees to new procedures and/or changes in existing procedures.

d.      Remains available during all duty hours for consultation by other laboratory personnel, to provide technical advice or assistance.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: –

e. Prepares daily FISH run using FISH verification confirmation

f. Reviews cases (FISH and Chromosome) and enters results in Epic using the mnemonic. 

g. Participates in validation studies.

h. Assists with laboratory operations and quality functions in presence of or absence of a supervisor.

ASCP (CG) certification required

A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • New York State technologist license from the Office of the Professions, State Education Department, State of New York.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology from a program registered by the NYS Department of Education or Bachelor’s degree in the major of biology, chemistry or physical sciences from an accredited college or university or at least five (5) years of experience in a similar laboratory including previous supervisory experience. 
  • A minimum of eight years of relevant work experience and/or training related to the responsibilities outlined above is required.
  • Proficiency in FISH and chromosome analysis is essential, along with demonstrated competence in interpreting and documenting FISH and chromosome results using current ISCN nomenclature.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrates exceptional knowledge or expertise in dealing with principles in current methodology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree and NCA/ASCP certification in addition to the minimum requirements.
  • Working knowledge of related theory, principles, practices, applicable instrumentation, analytical methods, quality control, statistical analysis, current government regulations and leadership.
  • 10 years of experience
  • Computer Proficient

Step 1

Schedule Interviews

If selected to continue the interview process, HR will reach out via phone or email first. Then, depending on your position, they will schedule an interview with unit managers or team members. You are encouraged to dress professionally for all interviews.

Step 3

Receive Offer

If you successfully complete the interview process and are identified as a finalist for the position, we will require that you complete a professional reference process. After evaluating the completed references, a decision will be made on who will receive a preliminary offer. If you receive a preliminary offer, HR will start the onboarding process with an agreed-upon tentative start date.

Step 4

Training & Orientation

You will be contacted by an onboarding specialist who will work with you on your pre-boarding requirements. Once fully cleared, we will ask you to complete compliance orientation regulatory training. On your first day, you will attend an online required orientation to acclimate to the health system and report to your new department based on instructions provided by your hiring manager.
