Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Health System Senior Director – Planned Giving.

In this role, the successful candidate will serve as both a frontline fundraiser and program leader, engaging high-net-worth individuals and their advisors in complex and blended gift planning while strengthening the long-term health of the planned giving pipeline. This role sits at the intersection of major, leadership, principal, and planned giving, partnering closely with gift officers, clinicians, and faculty to ensure integrated donor strategies across the enterprise.
A key focus of the role will be advancing and expanding the John Revere Society, building visibility, accelerating documented gift intentions, and deepening engagement among NYU Langone Healths most loyal and forward-thinking supporters. The Senior Director will also serve as the institutions subject-matter expert and internal advisor on planned and blended giving, helping elevate fluency, confidence, and collaboration across the development organization.
This is a role for an initiative-taking, relationship-driven fundraiser, someone energized by complex conversations and motivated to close meaningful, mission-aligned commitments. While deep technical expertise in planned giving is essential, success in this role requires equal strength in communication, judgment, and partnership, particularly when collaborating with physicians, researchers, and senior institutional leaders.

The Senior Director of Planned Giving serves as NYU Langone Healths senior leader responsible for developing, executing, and growing a best-in-class planned giving program that drives significant philanthropic revenue for institutional and campaign priorities. This role is both a lead fundraiser with a personal portfolio and a strategic team leader accountable for annual fundraising metrics, portfolio growth, and the long-term health of the planned giving pipeline.
The Senior Director brings deep expertise in complex gift planning and the ability to translate technical financial concepts into compelling philanthropic opportunities. They engage high-net-worth individuals and their advisors to structure complex gifts including bequests, charitable trusts, gift annuities, retirement plan gifts, IRA rollovers, life insurance, and blended gifts while ensuring full compliance, risk mitigation, and proper administration.
The role also serves as a key advisor and internal consultant across the Office of Development, partnering with gift officers, institutional leaders, the Legal Department, and Finance teams to advance philanthropic priorities. The Senior Director will collaborate closely with Development Marketing and Communications, serving in an advisory capacity by providing subject matter expertise and input to inform multi-channel gift planning strategy, messaging, and content that grow visibility and engagement among planned gift prospects and members of the John Revere Society.

Job Responsibilities:

Individual Fundraising and Portfolio Management

  • Maintain a robust portfolio (approximately 75100 prospects/donors) and achieve or exceed annual fundraising goals, including documented expectancies, realized gifts, and blended gifts (whenever possible).
  • Lead strategy for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting planned giving prospects across NYU Langone Healths enterprise.
  • Oversee the Emeritus Board, ensuring this distinguished group of past leaders remains meaningfully engaged as trusted advisors, philanthropic supporters, and champions of NYU Langone Healths mission.

 

Program Strategy, Governance, and Administration

  • Lead the John Revere Society by developing and executing a comprehensive growth strategy that expands membership while working to accelerate the realization of planned gifts from current members. Design and execute a comprehensive engagement plan encompassing cultivation and recognition events, documenting bequest intentions whenever possible and personalized stewardship that honors both newly realized planned gifts and our most loyal long-standing members.
  • Collaborate closely with Development Marketing and Communications by providing planned giving subject-matter expertise and strategic input to inform gift planning marketing strategy, donor-facing materials, digital content, and targeted outreach initiatives.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise that ensures accuracy and sophistication in all planned giving communications.
  • Oversee proper administration of estates, trusts, and other planned gifts, working closely with Legal, Finance, and Gift Administration to ensure compliance, fiduciary oversight, and timely distributions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal and state regulations affecting gift planning and proactively advise on regulatory and market developments.

 

Gift Planning Leadership and Gift Planning Team Management 

  • Lead, mentor, and evaluate planned giving team members, fostering a culture of high performance, accountability, professional development, and collaboration.
  • Serve as a visible and trusted leader within the Development office, partnering across teams to strengthen the culture of philanthropy.
  • Serve as the institutional expert on planned and blended giving strategies. 
  • Strengthen the departments pipeline by partnering with gift officers to surface new prospects and incorporate planned giving strategies into all stages of donor engagement.

  • Maintain accurate prospect and donor records in TRAX.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a 10 – 14 or more years of progressively responsible experience in planned giving or major gifts, including at least five years managing teams in a complex academic medical center, university, or large nonprofit environment.
Deep technical expertise in the full range of planned giving vehicles and blended giving strategies.
Proven history in cultivating, soliciting, and closing significant planned and blended gifts from high-net-worth individuals.
Experience collaborating with professional advisors (attorneys, accountants, wealth managers) and navigating legal and financial complexities.
Proven ability to lead, develop, and motivate teams while advancing a culture of accountability and collaboration.
Exceptional communication, analytical, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
Ability to work diplomatically and effectively with senior leadership, board members, volunteers, faculty, and donors.
Strong judgment, discretion, and commitment to compliance and ethical fundraising.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and perform in a fast-paced, highly matrixed environment.
Possesses the presence, inclusiveness, and communication skills necessary to be an effective representative of NYU Langone Health and a liaison to the donor base.
History of developing and enhancing relationships through authenticity, professionalism, and trust.
Ability to take ownership of opportunities, challenges, and decisions to drive work and organization forward.
Ability to lead, direct and motivate others; encourage and ensure professional development opportunities for reporting staff and act as a mentor.
Willingness to meet with reporting staff individually and as a full team.

Preferred Qualifications:
Juris doctor (JD) strongly preferred.
Minimum of 7 years of direct planned giving experience at a major higher education or academic medical institution.
Experience working within a campaign environment.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $222,017.06 – $275,625.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. Schedule Interviews

Receive Offer

If you successfully complete the interview process and are identified as a finalist for the position, we will require that you complete a professional reference process. After evaluating the completed references, a decision will be made on who will receive a preliminary offer. If you receive a preliminary offer, HR will start the onboarding process with an agreed-upon tentative start date.

Step 4

Training & Orientation

You will be contacted by an onboarding specialist who will work with you on your pre-boarding requirements. Once fully cleared, we will ask you to complete compliance orientation regulatory training. On your first day, you will attend an online required orientation to acclimate to the health system and report to your new department based on instructions provided by your hiring manager.
