The Chief of Psychiatry Service at the NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn will provide both administrative and clinical oversight of the Behavioral Health Service, including Inpatient Psychiatric Unit, the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), the Mobile Crisis Team, the Consultation-Liaison (CL) Psychiatry Service, and the Behavioral Optimization and Outcomes Support Team (BOOST). The position entails the day-to-day management of all areas in concert with other administrative and clinical leaders. Key responsibilities include strategic planning, program and policy development, alignment/compliance with all regulatory agencies, and recruitment and retention of Advanced Practice Practitioners (APP), including Nurse Practitioners and Physician staff. The Chief will also remain current on evidence-based practices to ensure the highest quality of care is provided, and that care is efficacious. The Chief is responsible for monitoring quality and efficiency metrics and developing improvement initiatives for both.

 

Administrative Responsibilities (Chief NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn)

  • Provide clinical leadership and ensure high quality services for all patients cared for by the
  • Service’s staff, including ongoing quality, safety, and performance improvement programs.
  • Provide academic leadership to ensure high quality medical student clerkships, residency, and fellowship training programs and clinical research programs. This includes monitoring ongoing teaching on the services and developing teaching curriculum for areas identified by departmental education and/or hospital leadership in need of focus.
  • Assist in the development of comprehensive plans for the growth and development of the service, including strategic plans, operating budgets, capital budgets, and business plans.
  • Participate regularly and effectively with Nursing Leadership in the decision-making processes and operational actions required for proper resource allocation, organized planning, and performance levels necessary to promote the efficient operation of the service.
  • Develop and implement clinical service programs such as clinical information technology and patient/family education to support the mission of the Hospitals, Family Health Centers (“FHC”) and the Health system.
  • Provide knowledgeable and effective administrative leadership, in close collaboration with pertinent Vice Presidents, Administrative Managers, and Nursing Directors in the operation and documentation of comprehensive departmental quality, safety, and performance improvement programs which conform to applicable legal standards, including NYSDOH, Joint Commission and OMH requirements and align Departmental goals with overall goals of NYU Langone Health.
  • Ensure that Departmental professional staff are oriented to and comply with Hospital policies and procedures, including chart reviews to assess medical staff compliance with institutional guidelines and timely completion of medical records.
  • Maintain clinically appropriate delineation of privileges for attendings, resident physicians and nurse practitioners within the Service. Provide performance evaluations and competency assessments as required.
  • Monitor performance of the medical staff for re-credentialing using clinical profiles and make recommendations for such reappointment. This includes performing reviews of all faculty on a biannual basis, identifying areas for improvement as well as advising on academic productivity.
  • Work closely with the Care Management and the Clinical Staff to implement best practice guidelines.
  • Provide overall supervision of house staff, fellows and advanced practitioners and provide the collaborative practice with nurse practitioners on the Service. Ensure compliance with NYSDOH 405 regulations regarding the supervision of house staff and their working hours on the Service.
  • Maintain overall financial accountability for all aspects of the Service, including participating in departmental budget targets and monitoring spending accordingly.
  • Effectively represents the NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn Psychiatry Service on all major medical and administrative committees.
  • Participate in root cause analyses related to behavioral events, providing expertise in review and also assuming responsibility for implementation of corrective actions when related specifically to the Department of Psychiatry.
  • Encourage recruitment of new attending physicians whose expertise will contribute to the excellence of the Service and effectively counsel physicians when appropriate in their interpersonal relationships with patients, families and/or hospital staff.
  • Support outreach efforts to the external communities (patients, physicians and communitybased organizations) to assure Hospital’s visibility, reputation, ongoing relationship and developing opportunities to assure growth strategies and community relationships.
  • Effectively represent or delegate appropriately the representation of the Service on all major medical and administrative committees including the Executive Committee of the Medical Board;

Performance Metrics

  • Patient satisfaction scores (Press Ganey) with the Service.
  • Inpatient admissions/discharges relative to budget and prior year.
  • Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) visits/billing relative to budget and prior year.
  • Mobile Crisis program visits/billing relative to budget and prior year.
  • Inpatient length of stay for acute care cases relative to budget, prior year, local and national benchmarks.
  • Appropriate on-call attending schedules for all sections of the service to support emergency care in the Hospital, Emergency Room and CPEP.
  • Compliance with pertinent Joint Commission, NYSDOH, OMH and Corporate Compliance requirements and effectiveness in correcting prior deficiencies.
  • Compliance with applicable ACGME/RRC guidelines for resident trainees on the Service.
  • Adequacy and accuracy of documentation in departmental minutes of quality assurance and improvement measures.
  • Number and scope of documented departmental initiatives to improve efficiency of clinical and educational programs and to conserve institutional resources.
  • Number of monthly incomplete medical records relative to standard of less than 5% of annual discharges.
  • Effectiveness in recruitment of clinically active attending physicians.
  • Quality of preparation of annual departmental budgets and reports.
  • Documentation of successful examples of interdepartmental collaboration in clinical service, medical education and clinical research programs.

Administrative Responsibilities (Vice Chair NYU Langone Health Psychiatry)

  • Actively participate on the Chair’s Executive Advisory Committee (EAC);
  • In collaboration with the Chair, Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, and NYU Langone Health psychiatry leadership build leadership at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn and coordinate clinical services across the NYU Langone Health system;
  • In collaboration with the Vice Chair for Education, oversee medical student, resident and fellowship training at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn;
  • In collaboration with the Vice Chair for Research, build clinical and translational research in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health.

Clinical Responsibilities

Provide clinical care to patients within NYU LB psychiatry services ~1 day per week

  • Specifics of the clinical role to be determined in discussions with the applicant

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Graduate of an approved Medical School
  • Completion of an approved residency in Psychiatry
  • Administrative and Clinical skills to ensure completion of Major Duties

License and Credentials

  • License to practice medicine in New York State
  • Board Certified in Psychiatry
