FLSA status: Exempt

Salary Range: $140,000-$180,000*

* Commensurate with experience

 

The Cytometry and Cell Sorting (CCSL) Director will work within the scientific framework of the CCSL to serve its goals and in collaboration with principal investigators employing the core.   The CCSL Director will provide scientific expertise and ensure timely consultation on and delivery of high-end and basic services aligned with the NYU Langone scientific community needs and priorities. The successful candidate will be responsible for all operational aspects of the core including budgeting and finance, staff and project workflow management, data management, advancing cytometry and cell sorting technology and methodology research collaborations, staff training and development and writing grant proposals and manuscripts. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Advanced Research Technologies.

 Key Challenges:

  • Update CCSL systems and procedures for data analysis and sharing, employing best practices and data standards to reduce variables for generating objective, unbiased data in an expeditious and cost-effective manner.
  • Educate and counsel scientific members on the use of current technologies and data generated in CCSL
  • Support and contribute to translational research projects and promote transdisciplinary research
  • Introduce new applications and technology where appropriate.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Maintains currency and familiarity with latest analytical technologies and methodology in immunology to provide basic and cutting edge technology portfolio for translational human immunology
  • Provides expertise and advises basic and clinical researchers on experimental design and data analysis.  Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature and scientific networking.
  • Support transdisciplinary projects such as immune cell single-cell profiling (e.g., cytometry, transcriptomics, protein secretion), spatial profiling (e.g., spatial transcriptomics, high-dimensional immunochemistry), protein profiling and functional assays; create and validate panels for these technologies, and trains other researchers in their use
  • Advance and implement cytometry and cell sorting technologies in consultation with DART leadership, and CCSL Scientific Advisory Board and external experts as needed.  Maintains currency and familiarity with new analytical technologies, meeting with vendors to discuss new or improved instrumentation/equipment and supplies
  • Create and implement educational programs that will serve the needs of the scientific user community
  • Develops and maintains a high level of customer service. Displays courtesy, tact, and diplomacy when dealing with staff, colleagues, vendors, representatives of other institutions and government and regulatory agencies
  • Train CCSL customers on instrument and applications
  • Communicate ongoing progress in projects and act as the key interface to engage  projects and customers; interface and communicate with collaborating institutions, departments
  • Coordinates project workflow with other DART core directors as needed (Immune Monitoring Laboratory Experimental Pathology Research Laboratory, Cytometry & Cell Sorting Laboratory, Applied Bioinformatics Laboratories)
  • Monitoring and continually seeking to improve the performance of cores
  • Supervise staff, ensuring that activities are of the highest standards and that all instrumentation/equipment is maintained at the highest working standards for rigorous and reproducible science.
  • Develop SOPs for all CCSL operations
  • Provides technical expertise and training/educational programs to staff
  • Comply with NYU MCIT data management best practices
  • Answers questions concerning test results and provides testing methods and collection requirements
  • Supervises supply, instrumentation and equipment operation, maintenance and purchases
  • Performs planning and budgeting: in partnership with the Finance Director and Assoc Dean, responsible for determining annual goals for the core, and devising an annual Business Plan that outlines the cores’ scientific development and projected levels of service, revenue, and expenses for the upcoming year.  
  • Monitor the cost effectiveness of cores as compared to other modes or sources of service
  • Oversees all core purchasing, monitoring expenses.
  • Attend initiating trial meetings and provide input on protocol, budget, timelines
  • Reviews and directs staff for specific collection/processing protocols for samples and documents all data.
  • Determining the need for new and/or replacement instrumentation/equipment and providing justification seeking sources of support to acquire them
  • Provide justification for requisitions and working with vendors to obtain optimal pricing.
  • Provides input into long and short range goal planning
  • Prepares reports and responds to DART documentation and reporting needs.
  • Reviews monthly P&L report and adjusts accordingly
  • Reports problems and their resolution
  • Prepares all reports and responds on or before due date
  • Serves as liaison to other areas of the institution.
  • Serves on Committees and others as required
  • Participates in teaching activities
  • Performs supervisory functions
  • Schedules vacation, holiday, and other coverage required
  • Schedules, assigns, and reviews daily work assignments
  • Trains and develops staff
  • Submits job description to fill vacant positions to Admin. Manager for requisition and approval; interviews and selects candidates; completes required new hire paperwork on a timely basis
  • Issues oral and written warnings, initiates performance improvement plans and terminations in accordance with human resources policy
  • Recommends all status changes (promotions, demotions, transfers, leave of absences, etc)
  • Resolve employee grievances alone or with assistance from Sr. Director
  • Completes performance planning and appraisal form for new and current staff on a timely basis; discuss appraisal with employee
  • Ensures compliance with governmental regulations and regulatory agency standards.
  • Disseminates information regarding changes to existing or new laws and regulation governing lab procedures
  • Performs ongoing inspections to staff to insure compliance; immediately instructs non-compliant staff to comply
  • Respect the rights, privacy and property of others at all times including the confidentiality of information

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD or other advanced degree in relevant biomedical field (immunology, biology, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology etc.), with at least 3 years of flow cytometry experience, and at least one year of previous supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• A strong basic and/or translational research background (required)

• Extensive experience in the analysis of cellular biology using cutting-edge technologies such as  high-dimensional flow or mass cytometry, single-cell expression analysis, high-dimensional spatial analysis, proteomics etc.

• Management experience and/or a record of achievement in collaborative and service-oriented environments.

• Significant knowledge and demonstrated expertise in flow based technology and data analysis.  National / international reputation and publication record 

• Knowledge of development of translational research programs, clinical research protocol review systems and processes, clinical trials operations, and regulatory compliance is preferred

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills  (oral and written)

• Demonstrated leadership skills.

• Highly collaborative and energetic management style

Training & Orientation
