NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center, providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital facility is home to the Knapp Cardiac Care Center—an advanced heart disease diagnostic and treatment facility—as well as a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services including women’s imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. Our Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center delivers comprehensive and specialized care for patients with traumatic injuries. The Stroke Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is designated by the New York State Department of Health as a Primary Stroke Center, with expert neurologists available to provide treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additionally, NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk has multiple outpatient sites, including an outpatient wound care center, a hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Supervisor, Sendout – Laboratory – Full Time, Days – Clinical Labs-Procure,Dist,Adm – Full-Time – Mo.

In this role, the successful candidate Responsible for the Central Processing and Sendout department. Acts as a liaison between the reference lab, management, and providers regarding specialty testing, special shipments, NYSDOH special testing permits, and exception handling. Coordinates quality assurance activities for critical values, shipping & tracking, inventory control, and result documentation. Performs all related duties as required to ensure quality results for patient care.

Job Responsibilities:

Supervision 

a. Will be supervising Central Processing and Send Out section employees 

b. Responsible for section personnel scheduling & coverage. 

c. Responsible for section QA. 

d. Responsible for training and competency of Data Entry Operators. 

e. Responsible for employee assessments. 

f. Responsible for obtaining special reports for leadership as needed. 

g. Responsible for cost containment.

Competent in management and troubleshooting for reference lab related testing: 

a. Coordination with Physicians, Directors/Assistant Directors, and Managers of specialty testing, including arrangements for direct shipments to reference labs.

i. Coordinating applications for Non-Permitted Lab testing with NYSDOH, physicians, and reference lab.

 ii. Gathering information for specialty testing sample requirements and ensuring proper handling of specimens from processing to delivery 

b. Coordination with off-site within the NYU Hospitals System to ensure proper

handling and timely shipment of send-out tests. 

c. Troubleshooting problem specimens ARUP Except-handling 

d. Calling primary care providers (MD/NP/PAs) and transcribing ARUP critical call reports as reported by ARUP 

Quality assurance for Central Processing and Send-out testing: 

a. Pending log review 

b. Verifying specimen source entry for specimens that require specifications for ARUP 

c. Daily and monthly cross-matching of ARUPs Critical Value Report. Ensuring critical values are reported in a timely manner. 

d. Making sure all send-out lab certificates of accreditation are up-to-date for the following agencies: CAP, CMS, NYSDOH 

e. Scanning results into EPIC and finalizing patient results for the Chemistry Sendout section as well as results from other departments 

f. QA report review

Inventory Quality Assurance for all Reference Lab supplies to include ARUP and Viracor: 

a. Ordering supplies 

b. Ensure supplies are sufficient and not past the expiration date.

Specimen coordination for in-house testing validation: 

a. Specimen coordination for special shipments to reference labs 

b. Comparison testing coordination with reference lab preparation of all Excel spreadsheets including comparison data entry

Regularly reviewing and keeping up-to-date with reference lab testing updates as well as ensuring updates are communicated to lab personnel/management/administration/LIS team. Changes can include: 

a. Specimen criteria changes 

b. NYSDOH approvals 

c. Turn-around-times

Attendance and Reliability 

a. Provides proper notification of absence or tardiness. 

b. Arrives at work on time, as scheduled. 

c. Adheres to departmental guidelines concerning sick time, vacation time, personal days, overtime, paid and unpaid leave(s). 

d. Does not abuse sick time.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Associates Degree with a minimum of 3 years Clinical Laboratory experience, especially in the area of Shipping and Handling of Biohazardous Materials, and knowledge of medical terminology. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Supervisory experience, current Certificate in Shipping and Handling of Biohazardous Materials, good computer skills, flexibility, and multitasking abilities are preferred.

The salary range for the role is $61,001.75 – $66,950.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.

Receive Offer

Step 4

Training & Orientation

You will be contacted by an onboarding specialist who will work with you on your pre-boarding requirements. Once fully cleared, we will ask you to complete compliance orientation regulatory training. On your first day, you will attend an online required orientation to acclimate to the health system and report to your new department based on instructions provided by your hiring manager.
