 Role Description

 NYU Langone Health is seeking an Assistant Director. The Assistant Director will report to, and act on behalf of, the Director. The Assistant Director is responsible for helping to implement the clinical program of veterinary care in the Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM). The ideal candidate for this position is someone who embraces collaboration, considers themselves a life-long learner, enjoys training and mentoring, persists in the face of a challenge, and proactively finds ways to help contribute to team goals.

 

Responsibilities

 

·         Assists the Director in administration of DCM as requested and provides backup for the Director as required.

·         Shares responsibility with Director for assuring overall NYU Grossman School of Medicine animal care and use program compliance with all Federal, State, and local regulations and AAALAC accreditation standards.

·         Assists the Director with maintenance and preparation of documents required to comply with regulatory and accreditation standards.

·         Manages the veterinary care program for NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

·         Assures that the veterinary care program is maintained in compliance with all Federal, State and local regulations, and AAALC accreditation standards.

·         Supervises the DCM veterinary technicians, veterinary technician supervisor, training coordinator, and clinical veterinarians.

·         Provides primary clinical veterinary care for all NYU Grossman School of Medicine research animals or make arrangements for such care to be provided when necessary to assure adequate clinical coverage.

·         Schedules and/or provide on-call emergency care on weekends and holidays as required to assure adequate clinical veterinary coverage.

·         Prepares and maintain current Standard Operating Standards as they apply to veterinary care program.

·         Serves as member of IACUC and is primary veterinary reviewer for animal study protocols submitted to IACUC.

·         Consults with faculty and research staff on choice of animal models, anesthesia, analgesia, euthanasia, surgical techniques, husbandry and other topics related to animal research.

·         Establishes and maintains programs for environmental enrichment, including current and accurate documentation, to assure compliance with Federal and State regulations.

·         Provides training for DCM staff and investigators as it relates to veterinary care program, humane use of laboratory animals, e.g. techniques and anesthetic analgesic management and other related subjects in cooperation with the DCM Training Coordinator.

·         Maintains an inventory of veterinary medical related equipment, drugs and supplies as required to provide adequate veterinary medical care and a quality service to investigators, including sale of veterinary drugs to investigators as required in connection animal studies.

·         Maintains aseptic surgical site as required to provide adequate veterinary care and provide quality surgical research services to investigators.

·         Maintains a diagnostic laboratory sufficient to perform diagnostic procedures most commonly required and coordinates efficient and economical use of commercial or other academic diagnostic laboratories as required to provide adequate veterinary care.

·         Coordinates veterinary technical services provided by DCM to investigators in direct support of animal studies.

·         Serves as a faculty member within a veterinary postdoctoral training program in laboratory animal medicine with responsibilities including, but not limited to, participation in a didactic lecture series, participation in a journal review rotation, and clinical mentorship of veterinary postdoctoral fellows

·         Collaboratively coordinates with departments within DCM, such as Operations and the DCM Business Office, in addition to departments outside of DCM, such as Environmental Health & Safety and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

·         Develops short and long-term plans to help achieve departmental goals, or to support the implementation of new ideas or processes, and proactively identifies and addresses contingencies

·         Maintains familiarity with trends, issues, and advances in strategic and program planning through periodic review of relevant journals or other literature

·         Identifies and actively pursues a planned program of professional growth through continuing education, etc.

Salary range: $185,000 – $200,000 annually. This is a faculty position.

 

 

 

 

Minimum Required Qualifications

 

·         DVM/VMD/BVSc degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school

·         Three years of laboratory animal medicine experience within an ACLAM recognized laboratory animal medicine residency training program

·         At least 2 years of laboratory animal medicine experience in an academic or industry setting.

·         ACLAM board eligibility required

Training & Orientation
