Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Research Engineer. The Research Engineer is the primary engineer responsible for the lab’s internal software platform a modern web application that supports all aspects of the lab’s daily operations and scientific record-keeping. The engineer will finish building out the existing internal Lab Portal and its modules, design and implement the underlying data-management layer, build integrations to laboratory data (including but not limited to flow cytometry, plate reader, sequencers, mass spectrometers), operationalize an AI-assisted data interrogation system, goals and mentoring framework for the lab, and own the reliability, deployment, and documentation of the platform end to end. This is a highly autonomous, high-impact role for an engineer who wants their work used every day by scientists doing translational cancer research.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Serve as the primary Research Engineer  for the internal Lab Portal. Complete build-out of remaining modules and harden shipped modules across lab operations (inventory, ordering, equipment booking, samples), scientific record-keeping (experiments organized by workflow stage, manuscripts, grants, vectors, antibodies), team management (people, schedule, chat, check-ins, IDP and goals framework), and intelligence layers (natural-language search, grants/literature radar, PowerPoint/Excel data capture, AI co-pilot).

2. Design and implement the lab’s data-management layer: schema for experiments, samples, instrument runs, and downstream artifacts (analyses, figures, manuscripts); ingestion pipelines from lab instruments; robust import from unstructured sources with schema validation, deduplication, and provenance tracking; and search/retrieval that lets any lab member locate any data by natural-language query.

3. Implement the lab’s newly designed goals, performance and mentoring framework end-to-end: annual Individual Development Plans, quarterly objectives, monthly experiment cycles, weekly check-ins, and AI-assisted reflection.

4. Own the deployment pipeline CI/CD, environment configuration, monitoring, incident response, backups, disaster recovery, access controls, and audit trails. Establish and maintain reasonable code-quality practices.

5. Design and integrate AI/LLM features (Lab Memory search, Capture, AI co-pilot, Paper/Grant Auto-Assembler, Risk Engine) with careful prompt engineering, evaluations, guardrails, and honest judgment about when AI is the right tool and when it is not.

6. Write and maintain both technical documentation (for future engineers) and user-facing documentation (for lab members using the system). Train new lab members on the platform during onboarding.

7. Attend weekly lab meeting; sit with the scientists using the system; incorporate their input; make product decisions in close collaboration with the PI and lab members.

Additional Position Specific Responsibilities:

Contribute to AI/ML tooling that supports the lab’s science (target discovery, immunopeptidomics, receptor engineering) with lab computational biologists.
Support integration with NYU institutional systems (ordering, IRB/IACUC, grants management, HPC) as needed.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have a 3+ years shipping production web applications end-to-end (front-end, back-end, database, deployment).
Strong proficiency with modern TypeScript/JavaScript React, Next.js (or comparable), Node.js.
Solid SQL fundamentals and Postgres experience; comfortable with schema design, query performance, transactions.
Fluent with git and pull-request-based collaborative development on GitHub or GitLab.
Experience deploying and operating a production application on a modern cloud platform (Vercel, AWS, GCP, Azure, or comparable).
Strong written and verbal communication; able to translate scientist needs into working software.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with lab informatics (Benchling, LabArchives, RSpace, eLabFTW, Dotmatics, or comparable ELN/LIMS).
Data engineering (ETL, ingestion, schema design); Python proficiency.
Production experience with modern LLM APIs (prompt engineering, evaluations, RAG).
Direct experience with lab-instrument data integrations.
Scientific or biomedical background prior lab, biotech, or academic science role.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
