Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Director, Perlmutter Cancer Center Research Administration.

In this role, the successful candidate will be reporting to the Executive Director, PCC Administration, the Senior Director, PCC Research Administration is responsible for providing leadership and overall administrative direction to the research administration of the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center (PCC), a joint program of the NYU Grossman School of Medicine (NYUSOM) and NYU Langone Hospitals (NYULH), consistent with the strategic direction and decisions made by its Director. The Senior Director serves as the Associate Director of Administration on the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and will lead the administrative planning and execution of the Perlmutter Cancer Center’s upcoming CCSG competitive renewal. Directs all operational activities of the PCC research programs, including staffing, systems and budgets, philanthropy, management of the non-physician/scientist staff and facilitation of the recruitment of scientific and administrative staff. Fosters effective relationships with departments throughout the NYUGSOM and NYULH, as well as external agencies, the PCC External Scientific Advisory Committee and PCC Board.

Job Responsibilities:

  • DEVELOPMENT OF GOALS Guides activities and ensures that the Cancer Center responds to the needs of the NYUGSOM and NYULH by adhering to goals/objectives for GSOM programs. Provides leadership support in achieving and maintaining NCI cancer center designation. Help the leadership to enhance the cancer center in an effort to maintain comprehensive designation. Prepares verbal or written reports to various services and administrative offices on status of and/or changes to objectives and initiatives of the research administration.
  • GRANTS MANAGEMENT – Serves as Associate Director of Administration on the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and leads all administrative aspects of the CCSG, including the competitive renewal application. Serves as the primary administrative liaison with the NCI Office of Cancer Centers, coordinating site visits, responding to NCI correspondence, and ensuring timely submissions of all required reports and documentation. Oversees CCSG budget development, cost allocation, and ongoing compliance with NCI guidelines and reporting requirements. Works with the Office of Grants Administration to ensure effective grant transition services for new faculty and identification of new proposals available through NIH and other granting agencies. Oversees the enhancement of information systems to support financial, regulatory and funding agency requests for data. Oversees the development and ongoing coordination of the CCSG and its corresponding laboratory budgets. Ensures appropriate allocation of expenses based on regulatory guidelines. Negotiates terms that are beneficial to the PCC with outside regulatory agencies.
  • TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER – Monitors technology transfer and clinical trials management initiated/performed within the PCC; assists Investigators in the development of appropriate opportunities for commercially sponsored research.
  • PHILANTHROPY – Promotes a general awareness of the efforts of the PCC in order to foster increased philanthropy from potential donors. Jointly with the Vice Dean for Development and the Executive Director, PCC Administration, oversees the work of the personnel dedicated to fund development for the PCC. Provides reports to donors as needed.
  • COMMUNITY OUTREACH – Develops programs that foster an awareness of the efforts of the PCC in the community. Oversees the development of materials intended to educate the general population about cancer prevention and awareness and services available at the PCC.
  • FACULTY RECRUITMENT – In conjunction with the Director, PCC, the Executive Director, PCC Administration, and the relevant Department Chairs, develops and implements strategic plans for the recruitment of research faculty in areas targeted for growth and approved by executive leadership. Develops relevant business plans for review and approval by the Director, PCC, Executive Director, PCC Administration, the Vice Dean(s) and the Chief Medical Officer. Initiates the development of term sheets and offer letters for research faculty. Coordinates with the NYUGSOM and NYULH regarding resources for recruits, including space and equipment. Ensures that all necessary paperwork is initiated and completed and guidelines are followed. Functions as a liaison with research faculty, as needed, in order to facilitate compliance.
  • EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT – Notifies research faculty of relevant PCC, NYUGSOM and NYULH events, programs and policies. Also, communicates new policies and procedures and applicable regulatory changes to all research staff, as indicated. Establishes mechanisms and processes that facilitate compliance and assists in reinforcing policy changes and regulatory requirements.
  • RESEARCH PROGRAMS – Coordinates with the Hospital Section Chiefs in the development of cancer-related clinical research programs. Identifies appropriate resources needed to address tasks to be performed or data to be gathered. Facilitates PCC review of cancer-related grant applications and manuscripts prior to their submission.
  • FACILITIES MANAGEMENT Oversees the strategic development of facilities planning for PCC research areas, assessing needs against short- and long-term goals. Coordinates all major research-related construction and renovation projects with Real Estate Development + Facilities within PCC insofar as NYUGSOM and NYULH are involved. Ensures that commitments are honored in any large space reallocation, construction or purchase of capital equipment, consistent with the guidelines of the NYUGSOM and NYULH. Coordinates the negotiation of capital equipment for research areas and ensures that appropriate level of analysis, projections and financial documentation is provided.
  • MANAGEMENT OF STAFF Develops staffing plans and ensures that position descriptions and performance standards are established for all levels of staff. Ensures that administrative infrastructure supports clinical research and multi-disciplinary programs. Develops and implements effective performance management guidelines for the PCC, and implements reward and disciplinary processes in accordance with NYUGSOM and NYULH guidelines.
  • CLINICAL RESEARCH MANAGEMENT (Clinical Trials) Provide oversight and administrative direction for all clinical research activity and compliance within the PCC. Direct pre- and post-award administrative support and financial management of all federal, industry and foundation clinical research sponsored projects. Support negotiation of rates, cost allocation and study specific budget with industry sponsors. Oversee IRB compliance. Organize industry site monitoring for active recruitment of clinical trials. Direct the management of trial budgets and cost allocations. Meet on a regular basis with the Offices of Clinical Trials and Grants Administration to ensure smooth and efficient operations. Oversee new protocol submissions, continuations and addendums, contracts, and support investigators in preparation and monitoring of IRB protocols. Provide leadership in quality performance by establishing systems to improve efficiency and customer satisfaction in clinical research operations. Provides guidance, direction and oversight in the development of SOPs, protocols, documentation standards etc., for use in support and monitoring of research related business processes. Work to continually process improve business operations for clinical research.
  • FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT Coordinates preparation of PCC budgets for the NYUGSOM and monitors financial performance throughout year. Determines changes necessary to address resolution of variances. Oversees the development of business plans for all research programs within the PCC, including planning, market analysis, marketing, and implementation. Oversees the management of grant and contract funding awarded to the PCC. Develops strategies for cost containment and maximization of revenues. Ensures that charges have been authorized and approved by the respective authorized Investigator. Prepares variance reports outlining any deviation from the approved budget.
  • POLICY AND PROCEDURE DEVELOPMENT Provides administrative support to the Director, PCC in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the Center, and ensures compliance with the mandates of the various regulatory agencies. Establishes systems to communicate any policy or procedural change to all NYUGSOM departmental staff and other NYULH personnel, as required.
  • PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT Works with the Director of the PCC and the Executive Director, PCC Administration to facilitate new programs and plans. Develops and implements newly approved programs for the PCC. Develops and fosters a multidisciplinary approach to programmatic efforts in order to generate revenue, increase community awareness of the PCC, and enhance the stature of the PCC within the scientific and medical community. Determines the productivity of each program based on faculty and patient needs, staffing qualifications and/or organizational constraints. Negotiates space and funding allocations for new and/or expanded programs and services. Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Master’s degree in Business, Health Administration or related field with a minimum of 5 years of leadership experience with progressively increasing responsibility within a peer-reviewed Cancer Center or major academic healthcare institution, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Solid foundation in general management and demonstrated ability to build teams and bridge strategic ideas into operational programs. Demonstrated skill in oversight and operations of clinical trials. Prior strong experience with grants management required, including direct experience with the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant–ideally in a leadership role on a CCSG competitive renewal–and demonstrated senior-level cooperative relationships with NIH/NCI and other granting agencies. Excellent communications skills to interface effectively with diverse internal and external professional groups and committees are essential. Interpersonal comfort and operational success in interactions with Board members, potential donors, physicians, scientists and other colleagues. Ability to work in a complex matrix setting, build consensus, and develop new approaches to problem solving.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $222,017.06 – $290,472.00 Annually.
