NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk seeks a visionary, operationally excellent, and academically experienced physician leader to serve as Chief, Department of Medicine. This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for the full clinical, operational, academic, and strategic direction of the Department of Medicine. The Chief of Medicine will provide direct oversight of all medicine section chiefs, champion a culture of excellence and accountability, and drive measurable improvements in clinical quality, patient safety, throughput and length of stay, and patient experience.

The Chief of Medicine will report directly to both the Chair of Medicine of NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine (NYUGLISM) and the Chief Medical Officer of NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk, under the oversight of the Senior Vice President and Chief of Hospital Operations, NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk, serving as a critical bridge between institutional strategy and bedside care.

 

 

Reporting Structure & Organizational Relationships:

 

The Chief of Medicine maintains a dual-reporting structure:

  • Chair of Medicine, NYU Grossman Long Island School of Meidcine – for academic affairs, faculty development, research strategy, an alignment with system-wide clinical 
  • Chief Medical Office, NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk, under the oversight of the Senior Vice President and Chief of Hospital Operations, NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk – hospital operations, quality and safety performance, regulatory complicance, and strategic institutional priorities
  • All Meidcine Section Chiefs rreport directly to the Chief of Meidcine, creating a united, accountable department structure

Department Oversight:

The Chief of Medicine holds direct oversigh responsibility for the following sections, with each section Chief reporting directly to this role:

  • General Internal Meidcine & Hospital Medicine
  • Caridology Critical Care (CCU)
  • Pulmonology Medicine & Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
  • Gastroenterology
  • Nephrology
  • Hematology & Medical Oncology
  • Hospital Medicine
  • Infectious diseases
  • Palliative Medicine
  • Rheumattology
  • Endocrinology & Metabolism
  • Palliative Care
  • Addtional sections as the department gros

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Leadership & Quality
  • Establish and uphold the highest standards of clinical care across all medicine sections
  • Lead departmental efforts to reduce length of stay (LOS), improve care transitions, and optimize inpatient throughput
  • Drive performance on key quality metrics including risk-adjusted motality,  hospital-acquired conditions (HACs), and readmission rates
  • Champion initiatives in patient safety, infection prevention, and regulatory compliance (Joint Commission, DOH, CMS)
  • Collaborate with nursing, care management, social work, and pharmacy leadership to optimize multidisciplinary care models
  • Inpatient Hospital Operations
  • Partner with the CMO and hospital operations leadership to improve bed utilization, throughput, and discharge planning
  • Implement data-driven systems to monitor, report, and improve operational and clinical KPIs across all medicine units
  • Develop and sustain processes that reduce emergency department boarding and improve patient flow from admission to discharge
  • Oversee rounding structures, teaching service organization, and staffing models to ensure operational efficiency without compromising educational mission
  • Patient Experience
  • Foster a culture of compassionate, patient- and family-centered care throughout the department
  • Lead initiatives to improve HCAHPS scores and other patient experience metrics, working collaboratively with nursing and operations leaders
  • Address disparities in care through equitable clinical practices and culturally competent communication

Faculty Leadership & Academic Mission:

  • Recruit, develop, and retain outstanding faculty across all medicine specialties
  • Support and mentor faculty in career development, scholary activity, clinical innovation, and promotion
  • Advance the academic mission of NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine through graduate medical education, fellowship training, and medical student education
  • Foster a culture of intellectual curiosity, inquiry, and evidence-based practice across the department

  • Supporr education: Medical Students and Graduate Medical Education (GME)
  • Advance the academic mission to strengthen, expand and integrate the Internal Medicine subspecialties.
  • Advance the academic mission to strengthen, expand and integrate Medical Student Education program in internal medicine and the medical subspecialties at NYULH-Suffolk.

  • Assure that high standards of clinical service and scholarship are consistently maintained across all training programs.

  • Support program building & strategic growth.

  • A priority for the Chief of Medicine will be the development and expansion of clinical programs that position NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk as a regional destination for care.

Required:

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution

  • Board certification in Internal Medicine and/or a relevant subspecialty

  • Meet eligibility requirements for academic appointment at the rank of Assistant / Associate / Full Professor of Medicine at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine.

  • Active New York State medical licensure (or eligibility)
  • Demonstrated progressive leadership experience in academic medicine, including prior experience as a Section Chief, Vice Chair, Division Director, or equivalent
  • Strong track record in inpatient clinical operations, quality improvement, and performance metrics management
  • Experience with physician leadership, faculty development, and mentoring in an academic environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to lead diverse, high-performing teams.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with graduate medical education (GME) program oversight and ACGME accreditation

  • Experience navigating complex academic medical center environments with dual clinical and academic reporting lines

  • Track record of successful collaboration with hospital administration, nursing leadership, and inter-professional teams

  • Demonstrated commitment to care for diverse patient populations

Salary Range:

  • $450,000-$550,000

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range in compliance with New York State Salary Transparency laws. Compensation is determined based on several factors, including experience, specialty, education, and institutional needs. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience and the requirements of NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine. NYULH provides a generous suite of faculty benefits.

Training & Orientation

You will be contacted by an onboarding specialist who will work with you on your pre-boarding requirements. Once fully cleared, we will ask you to complete compliance orientation regulatory training. On your first day, you will attend an online required orientation to acclimate to the health system and report to your new department based on instructions provided by your hiring manager.
