Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Research Technician.
The applicant will be expected to be ambitious, highly motivated and well organized. The overall project centers upon DNA assembly in yeast and mammalian genome engineering.
The position will primarily be responsible for implementing techniques in molecular biology and genetics to support the project goals. A strong skill set in molecular cloning is required, as is experience with basic microbial growth and transformation techniques. A basic to advanced knowledge of targeted endonuclease approaches (e.g. CRISPR/Cas9) is very useful. Generally speaking, applicants are expected to have mastered Genetics in college.
The applicant will receive advanced training in genome engineering on the job, in particular the assembly of synthetic DNA molecules, and will have plenty of room to grow these and other skills.
Experimental Duties – General techniques in molecular biology and genetics, including plasmid construction, analysis and maintenance, PCR, bacterial and yeast transformation. Participates in standard lab experiments. Assists in experiments using established protocols and procedures, and records results of experiments in electronic lab notebook. Performs all general and advanced procedures within the lab with minimal supervision. Assists in planning of experiments as well as in interpretation of results. Some programming knowledge (e.g. Python, Java, R) extremely useful but not essential. Experience repairing equipment useful.
Assist in Developing Procedures – Assists in implementing new procedures and protocols using advanced instrumentation to support experiments. Participates actively in developing, recommending and implementing new approved procedures, or modifications to existing protocols and procedures. Maintains and updates technical knowledge.
Lab Duties – Basic lab duties under general supervision as well as more advanced duties under direct supervision. Assists with the ordering and tracking of laboratory supplies. Performs routine technical tasks and assists in the general maintenance of the lab, such as preparing stock reagents and maintaining inventory of lab supplies.
Communication/Relationship with Others – Cooperates, communicates and relates well to all levels of Medical Center and able to communicate clearly in English. Listens carefully to others in order to respond appropriately, answer questions or obtain needed information in an effective manner. Maintains confidentiality of all research data.
Judgment/Decision-Making – Is able to recognize problems as they occur, and through the application of appropriate policy/ procedure, determine and/or recommends the appropriate solution. Seeks guidance as necessary for performance of duties, asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to ensure accuracy. Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention.

This is an entry level trainee position with no experience necessary and a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Life Sciences or a related field is preferred. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $43,800.00 – $45,000.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
